Carter Backer Winter

Background Summary

Established in 1957, Carter Backer Winter (CBW) is a full-service accountancy firm based in London.

The group comprises 17 partners, as well as a team of over 165 professional and support staff. This makes it “small enough to care about you and your business, but big enough to create opportunities” for its clients.

CBW is led by Peter Winter, managing partner at the company, who supports and advises a number of the firm’s largest clients.

Andy White acts as the group’s chairman, advising national, international, personal, and corporate clients on their strategic affairs. He joined the group via a merger with Gordon Leighton in 2008 as a partner, before being elected as chairman in 2019.

CBW claims to provide a “powerful combination of business and financial insights” that can relate to effective wealth management, business start-ups and scales, investment in assets and innovation, overseas expansion, tax efficiencies, regulatory compliance, and profitable growth.

As a full-service accountancy firm, CBW offers a range of service lines, including audit and accounts, tax, financial planning, corporate recovery and insolvency, corporate finance, research and development, forensic and investigation, outsourcing, and HR consultancy.

The group’s key specialist sectors are split into property, start-ups, regulated businesses, and logistics.

Financials

Carter Backer Winter reported a turnover of £14.94m for the year ended 13 January 2024, which shows a rise of 4.47% year-on-year from the year before.

Recent Coverage

In May 2023, Carter Backer Winter was acquired by Gravita. At the same time, Gravita also acquired Davis Grant. The deals were facilitated by private equity investor Tenzing.

Gravita appointed four new partners, as the firm doubled down on its growth ambitions. The office move, completed in April, follows a period of deal making for the firm, which had also joined forces with Propel, Carter Backer Winter and Davis Grant.

Gravita resigned as Belluscura’s auditor due to an inability to meet its regulatory requirements in respect of its engagement with the company. As a result, Gerald Edelman LLP was appointed as the new auditor of Belluscura with immediate effect.

Gravita launched in 2022 with the intention of becoming the UK’s “leading” partner for SMEs. Clients will have access to a full-service firm with specialists all under one brand offering audit, tax, accounts, financial outsourcing, payroll and advisory.
