Who are Smith Cooper

For over 35 years, Smith Cooper has been one of the country’s most progressive accountancy firms. The business currently has offices based in London, Newcastle, Leicester, Telford, Cambridge, Ashbourne, Birmingham, Nottingham and Derby.

Known primarily for its work in the Midlands, where its four key offices are based, the firm has been named as the Medium Accountancy Firm of the Year by ICAEW and the SME Advisory Team of the Year by Insider.

Furthermore, the Smith Cooper group of companies expands the firm’s purview to include professional advisory services outside of accountancy. These include IT managed service provider Infuse Technology, Infuse Security, Smith Cooper System Partners and Smith Cooper Independent Financial Solutions.

The firm is also a member of the Alliott Global Alliance, an award-winning alliance of accounting, law and consulting firms, which has assisted in the business’ expansion efforts, while remaining cost-efficient, and compliant with laws and regulations.

What do they do

Smith Cooper provides a variety of accountancy and financial services to its many clients from various sectors of business, including the hospitality and engineering sectors. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Accounts and audit work – including compliance services, management accounting, internal and external auditing, and forensic accounting into fraudulent financial activity and misrepresentation
  • Tax services – including work relating to corporate tax, personal tax, VAT and indirect tax, and employment tax
  • Outsourcing services – including HR consultancy, payroll services, IT support, management accounting and bookkeeping services
  • Business recovery and insolvency services – services are available to clients who are creditors, directors, shareholders, solvent entities and individuals with debt problems

Recent financials

For the financial years ended 31 March, Smith Cooper decided not to disclose a copy of its profit and loss account as part of an audit, so any definitive financial results are unavailable.

However, the firm saw its group revenue increase by 25% to £19m and profits were up from the previous year, in 2019. This emphasises the company’s exponential growth prior to the pandemic.

In the news

Smith Cooper Independent Financial Solutions recently hired two recent graduates, Aman Matharu and George Brandist, to the firm as financial planning analysts.

Both join the firm from Coventry University, where they completed degrees in Accounting and Finance, and Finance respectively. They will now be trained to become chartered financial planners.

Paul Hamilton, director of SCIFS, has “close ties” to Coventry University Business School dating back to 2008, contributing time and “financial planning expertise” to the department of Economics, Finance and Accounting.

On the new appointments, Hamilton said: “Aman and George are the second and third appointments from this source following the earlier successful appointment of Jason Million who will become a chartered financial planner later this year.

“We are delighted to be able to identify talent directly from one of the highest ranked Modern Universities in the UK and to be able to employ two of the six high quality candidates that applied on this occasion.”

He added: “Over the past year, our services have become increasingly relevant to a wider range of individuals and businesses, who have been looking to review their wealth management strategies and planning.”
