Who are Barnes Roffe?

Founded in Moorgate in 1899, Barnes Roffe is an independent firm of chartered accountants and business advisors.

A London-based firm, Barnes Roffe operates from five locations across the capital, with its Bushwood, East London site the oldest dating back to the late 1970s and hosting 60 team members.

Newer offices at London Bridge and Liverpool Street were established in 2016 and 2018 and link to the group’s South London and East London sites respectively.

The group has over 20 partners and more than 150 staff members, while providing its services for at least 2,000 owner managed businesses. 

While some 15 of the firm’s partners are audit partners, four act as tax partners, one serves as an audit and corporate finance partner, one as a tax and corporate finance partner, one as partner designate, and one as a partner.

What do they do?

Barnes Roffe provides audit and assurance, consulting, financial advisory, risk management, and tax services to owner-managers and corporate clients.

Moreover, the company offers support in managing assets, guidance on trusts, tax liability reductions, inheritance tax advice, estate planning, and pensions for its individual clients.

The firm’s complete service offerings break down into four key areas; audit and financial, taxation, corporate finance and specialist advisor services, and accounting and business advisory services.

As for the sectors Barnes Roffe covers, these include but are not limited to charities, e-commerce, construction, financial services, healthcare, hospitality and leisure, manufacturing, media, property and real estate, retail, transport and logistics, and travel.

Recent financials 

The independent firm of chartered accountants and business advisors saw its turnover stall in FY20, falling 1.1% year-on-year to £18.1m.

Operating profit also declined a similar 2.6% year-on-year for the year ended 30 June 2020 from £8.4m to £8.18m.

As for Barnes Roffe’s liquidity, this also held steady while dropping slightly, decreasing from £4.21m in FY19 to £4.19m in FY20.

Looking ahead to a head wholly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the group claimed that it has “reasonable expectation” that it has “adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future”.

In the news

One recent hire at the group comes in the form of Simon Buss as a partner designate. Buss joined Barnes Roffe in July 2020, bringing over 20 years of experience in pensions and 15 years’ experience in auditing pension schemes to the firm. 

Prior to joining the group, Russ served as a pensions audit director at BDO for four years, and has also held roles at Baker Tilly, Trafalgar House Pensions Administration, and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Elsewhere, Jasmine Worth was promoted to a partner at Barnes Roffe’s East London division, effective 1 January 2021. Specialising in VAT, as well as other corporate and tax matters, Worth joined the firm as a graduate in 2006 before becoming both audit manager and managing the Leytonstone accounts services department.
