Accountancy firm BHP has recruited 54 trainees in its largest intake for more than 10 years, reflecting continued demand from small and mid-sized businesses for professional advice.

The new cohort includes 29 graduates, 17 non-graduates and seven placement students. For the first time, the programme has also offered full-time trainee roles to participants in BHP’s Work Experience Academy, which provides placements for 16 to 18-year-olds considering careers in accounting and finance.

BHP, which has offices in Sheffield, Leeds, York, Chesterfield and Cleckheaton, runs a trainee scheme that combines professional study with hands-on experience across the firm’s service lines. Over the past five years, more than 190 professionals have come through the programme.

Karen Arch, chief people officer at BHP, said: “In an uncertain world, it’s crucial that we have the right talent in place for businesses and organisations looking for trusted advice, now and in the future. We are hugely proud of the development opportunities we offer to people through our training programme and it’s especially pleasing to be able to offer employment to the highest number in ten years despite the wider mixed economic outlook.”

She added that one in five of this year’s intake had previously worked with the firm, either during a university placement year or through its academy.

The intake began with a two-week induction, bringing together new recruits, past trainees and staff from across the firm to share experiences.

Arch added: “Every member of the team plays a pivotal role in supporting businesses and business owners with the ever changing regulatory requirements. This year our programme has welcomed not just the next generation of advisors but also trainees who will pursue other development pathways across the business such as payroll and IT.”

BHP, which has been providing services to UK businesses for more than 150 years, said its latest investment in training forms part of its long-term strategy to develop talent across the sector.

The firm has more than 450 staff, including 35 partners at offices in Sheffield, Cleckheaton, Leeds, Chesterfield, and York.
