Sumer Northern Ireland has outlined plans to increase its workforce by 100 over the next three years, building on growth achieved since joining Sumer Group in June last year.

The Belfast firm has expanded its headcount by 20% since the acquisition and now employs 130 staff across all levels. The increase has supported its work in specialist areas including innovation tax reliefs, forensic accounting and audit.

The practice leads Sumer Group’s research and development services across the UK and has built one of the fastest-growing audit teams in Northern Ireland, with more than 60 staff. Its team also includes engineers with backgrounds in biomedical science and mechanical and chemical engineering.

Sumer Northern Ireland continues to focus on the SME sector, providing audit and accounting, corporate finance, forensic accounting, internal audit and tax services. The firm does not undertake listed company work, reflecting its SME-driven client base.

Brian Clerkin, managing partner at Sumer Northern Ireland, said joining the wider group had strengthened the firm’s capabilities. He said: “Being part of a UK-wide group of 2,400 professionals gives us access to a wealth of expertise and resources, while retaining the local knowledge and personal relationships our clients value most.

“By joining Sumer Group, we have united and combined deep-rooted local expertise with the scale, technology and specialist insight of a larger organisation that has also enabled us to grow our client base – as we can see from the R&D team who are now assisting companies across the UK.”

The firm expects to expand both organically and through acquisitions as it builds its role in Northern Ireland’s accountancy and advisory market.

Clerkin added: “Much has been achieved since joining Sumer, but this is only the beginning. We have focussed on continuing to evolve as a firm that’s progressive and up to date with the latest regulatory developments and operational efficiencies so we can offer the very best service.”
