MHA has appointed a new partner and director alongside two internal promotions as it expands its operations across Scotland.
Stephen Thom joins the Edinburgh office as corporate tax partner while Joshua Williams has been appointed as personal client tax director. The firm also promoted Alan Downie and Allan Smith to the role of partner within the city.
Thom previously ran his own tax consultancy and began his career in London with BDO before moving into multinational financial services. He specialises in corporate restructuring, corporate debt taxation, and property related tax structures for mid to large corporate clients.
Williams joins from accountancy firm CT with nearly 20 years of experience in personal tax matters. He advises business owners and individuals on inheritance tax, succession planning, and HMRC investigations, specifically within the agriculture and real estate sectors.
Meanwhile, Downie joined the firm in 2010 and currently leads the corporate audit team, advising groups in the construction and manufacturing industries. Smith joined MHA in 2012 and manages a portfolio covering professional services, medical, and investment firms.
MHA is the UK member of Baker Tilly International and employs more than 2,300 staff and 150 partners. The network operates across 147 territories with global revenues of $6.8bn.
The firm is currently recruiting for trainee and qualified roles across its Edinburgh and Aberdeen offices. It maintains a presence across England, Wales, Ireland, South East Europe, and the Cayman Islands.
Euan Fernie, partner at MHA, said: “Stephen and Joshua strengthen our senior tax capability in Edinburgh, while the promotions of Alan and Allan to partner roles rightly recognise the depth of experience and leadership already within the firm.
“Together, these appointments reflect both sustained growth in Scotland and a clear commitment to investing in people as we continue to expand our team across all levels.”
