PSAA announces new chair

The Public Sector Audit Appointments Limited (PSAA) has announced the appointment of Bill Butler, CPFA, CSyP as the new chair. As a chair and non-executive director with a number of national organisations, with experience in organisational transformation, partnership working and a strong knowledge of good governance, management and audit, Butler will take over from Steve Freer on 1 April 2024. Commenting on the appointment, Cllr Abi Brown OBE, chair of the Improvement and Development Agency, said: “I am delighted to welcome Bill into his new role. His extensive experience and expertise of the public sector audit world combined with his more recent experience as a Non-executive Director and Chair made him an outstanding candidate. “Bill will play a significant role with all of our key partners to make the sustainable improvements that are needed in both the short and medium term to public sector audit and in particular local government audit.I would also like to extend a huge thank you to Steve Freer who has done an outstanding job as the founding Chair of PSAA over the last 9 years.” Butler said: “I am very pleased to be joining PSAA. Local governments and their auditors face significant challenges. I am looking forward to building on Steve’s achievements and working with all of our partners to help to deliver the timely assurance and certainty that is expected from public audit.” CIPFA has welcomed the appointment of Butler, CPFA, CSyP as PSAA new chair. Rob Whiteman, CIPFA CEO, said: “Many congratulations to Bill on his new appointment as the Chair of PSAA. He is joining us at a crucial time when local councils are reeling under extreme cost pressures. Following Steve’s dedicated input as the founding chair over the past nine years, I look forward to working with Bill as he brings a wealth of experience in good governance, management and audit. “We here at CIPFA, look forward to working with PSAA under Bill’s leadership to drive much needed sustainable improvements in the long-term in local government audits.”
