ICAEW has launched a new generative artificial intelligence course for its members as part of a formal collaboration with Microsoft.

The GenAI in Professional Practice course marks the first phase of a memorandum of understanding designed to enhance technology skills.

The initiative aims to support chartered accountants and small business clients through tailored learning resources. ICAEW developed the programme following reports from mid-sized firms that a lack of sector-specific support hindered technology adoption.

Many members currently use Microsoft systems, making the Copilot tool a primary entry point for artificial intelligence integration. Microsoft contributed practical insights to the accelerator programme to demonstrate how its software functions within an accountancy context.

The programme includes free foundational courses and optional paid modules for deeper study. Further initiatives focusing on specific software applications are expected to follow this initial launch.

Chief executive Alan Vallance said: “The GenAI Accelerator Programme will be of huge benefit to ICAEW members, and I am delighted that we are working with Microsoft to support members in building practical AI capability.

“Chartered accountancy is changing at pace, and enabling our members to stay at the forefront of technology is a vital part of futureproofing the profession. This collaboration reflects ICAEW’s commitment to helping members adopt emerging technologies in ways that are practical, responsible and aligned with professional standards. We look forward to exploring other areas of collaboration with Microsoft.”
