The Charity Commission has appointed Jan Lasik as its new director of legal and accountancy services, strengthening the regulator’s senior leadership team.
Lasik was most recently general counsel and secretary at the National Trust. Before that, he served as deputy head of legal at the Bank of England, having begun his career in private practice at two international law firms.
The director of legal and accountancy services is responsible for leading the Commission’s legal and accountancy functions and ensuring the legal integrity of its regulatory work and policies. The role also involves advising the board and contributing to the overall leadership and management of the regulator as a member of its executive leadership team.
Lasik will oversee legal teams that advise on charity registration, compliance, enforcement, regulatory authority and litigation strategy. His responsibilities include guiding legal input into delivery of the Commission’s 2024–29 strategy, which sets out commitments to support charities to comply with regulation while taking action where wrongdoing or harm is identified.
He will also have responsibility for the Commission’s accountancy team, which is led by an accountancy profession specialist. In addition to supporting regulatory activity, the team works with other UK regulators on the development and maintenance of the charity reporting accounting framework.
David Holdsworth. Charity Commission CEO, said: “We were fortunate to attract an impressive pool of candidates in which Jan stood out.
“He brings a strong understanding of charity and wider law at a challenging time for the sector, and his experience, including working for an independent statutory regulator from his time at the Bank of England, will be of benefit as the Commission expands its casework staffing and explores the potential for technology solutions to meet increasing demand.”
Lasik added: “Charities are vital to our society, as is a strong and independent regulator. I look forward to joining the Commission, playing my part in ensuring that the law is upheld, wrongdoers are held to account, and that talent and innovation across the entire charity sector can flourish.”
