UKEB announces the death of board member Sandra Thompson

The UKEB has announced the death of its non-executive board member, Sandra Thompson, who had carried out her role “with enthusiasm and dedication”. As an inaugural board member, and the first chair of the UKEB’s accounting firms and institutes advisory group, the industry body praised Thompson’s passion for accounting, as well as “her formidable technical skills and intellect” which were credited with building “the core foundations of the organisation that UKEB is today”. Thompson was a chartered accountant with over 30 years of experience in accounting standards, including as a national standard setter in the UK. She led the financial instruments team at the IASB in the period up to the adoption of IFRS by the European Union in 2001. Subsequently, Thompson became an accounting technical partner at PwC, where she led the UK financial instruments team during the global financial crisis and recovery. She was a prominent member of PwC’s global accounting leadership team, leading the Big Four firm’s strategic work on communications until her retirement from the firm in 2020. Despite her retirement, she continued to act as an executive coach and had a number of voluntary roles in her local community. Sandra Thompson was serving her second term, which was supposed to end on 14 March 2027, when the news was broken. The UKEB said in its statement: “Sandra will be greatly missed by the UKEB board and secretariat as well as her friends within the wider international accounting community. Our thoughts are with her family at this time."
