UK accountancy and business advisory firm Johnston Carmichael has strengthened its Private Client Tax team in the UK with the appointment of David Tait as tax director.

Tait joins from a big four firm in Cambridge and London, where he spent nearly 14 years building expertise in tax advisory services, with a particular focus on real estate and property matters and working with owner-managers of businesses.

According to Johnston Carmichael, his experience will “significantly enhance Johnston Carmichael’s offering at a crucial time” following the substantial tax changes for individuals and businesses outlined in the Autumn Budget, including Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and inheritance tax (IHT).

Based in Edinburgh, Tait will collaborate with the firm’s 60-strong private client tax team across the UK, providing tailored tax planning solutions.

He will also work closely with specialist teams in the firm, including Wealth Management and Business Advisory to deliver comprehensive, integrated support to Johnston Carmichael’s diverse client portfolio.

Tait said: “I’m excited to start the year in my new role at Johnston Carmichael. The property market is becoming more complex, particularly with recent changes to CGT and IHT which will have a significant impact on individuals, businesses and investors alike. I have specialised in working with property-rich individuals and businesses for the majority of my career and it’s great to now bolster Johnston Carmichael’s experience in this space.

“I have consistently heard about the outstanding reputation of Johnston Carmichael from peers within the industry. Already, I can see why, with a positive culture and forward-thinking approach to advisory services.”

Alex Docherty, partner and head of Private Client Tax at Johnston Carmichael, added: “It’s fantastic to start 2025 with the announcement of David’s appointment who brings invaluable experience to our team. His rich insight from across the property sector will bring a new dimension to the advice we offer clients.

“Johnston Carmichael is consistently evolving, and we are proud to have enhanced our team south of the border too where Chris Hodgson has joined as Private Client tax director. We’re looking forward to 2025 and beyond with a strengthened team.”
