The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has recognised Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) for the innovative work of its Accounting Clinic which provides a pro-bono service for charities delivered by student advisors.
The clinic service is free to eligible UK charities. The clinics are led by selected final year accounting and finance students who are supervised by LJMU academic staff who are qualified accountants.
Student advisors review the necessary charity accounts and outline any system enhancements before academics review all completed documentation and sign-off the independent examination.
Michael Franco, programme leader for Accounting and Finance, said: “This endorsement and accreditation by the ACCA recognises the work and commitment of the Liverpool Business School Accounting Clinic and the academics and students involved with it.
“Not only is the accounting clinic providing charities with a pro-bono service offering advice, support and guidance in the completion of independent examinations but, it is also providing students with practical and relevant professional experience.”
He added: “Receiving this accreditation validates the on-going commitment and support provided by our dedicated team of professional accounting academics – Pam Dodd, Chris Dickson and Vicki McClafferty – along with Tonia Galati at TGConsulting who worked with the ACCA to establish the accreditation.”
Jon Maddams, ACCA, concluded: “ACCA is delighted to endorse the Accounting Clinic at LJMU. We believe it is a fantastic initiative that directly supports our drive to be a force for public good and links directly to our core values of inclusion, integrity and innovation. The pro bono clinic is uniquely placed to provide an invaluable service to UK charities, in addition to creating fantastic opportunities to develop the accounting talent of tomorrow.”
