The national alliance of independent accountancy firms, CharterGroup, has been acquired  by Charter Group Alliance, a new company set up by WMT Chartered Accountants.

CharterGroup, which was previously owned by the Professional Empowerment Guild, will now be led by Derek Smith, a financial and commercial management specialist.

The new team also includes business and HR consultant, Frances Hall, and development and corporate finance adviser, Andrew Williamson, alongside, Louise Beddoes, the firm’s new business manager.

CharterGroup was formed in 1986, and provides services and support to leading independent accountancy firms across the UK.

Smith said: “I have worked with many CharterGroup members as both an independent advisor and as a consultant to CharterGroup, finding them forward-thinking and client-focussed. I look forward to working with the members to develop the services CharterGroup provides to them.

“I am also delighted with the team of directors who will be taking the group forward. Not only are they all qualified accountants but all have held senior positions in practising firms and have great experience and skills.”

Gary Corbett, former CEO of Charter Group and co-director added: “The new team has the skills, expertise and energy to lead CharterGroup successfully into the next decade.

“They bring both the experience of holding senior leadership roles in accountancy firms, and their skills as consultants to the group. The member firms will benefit greatly from their support, guidance and focus.”
