Mercer and Hole has appointed Elizabeth Fothergill as director and head of tax knowledge, a newly created role that the firm said forms part of its ongoing investment in and expansion of its tax and private client services.
From the firm’s London office, Fothergill will work with its private client and tax teams to ensure technical “excellence, knowledge sharing and training” that leads to “clear, practical and commercially focused” support for clients.
After starting her career as a solicitor in 1998, Fothergill worked on Berwin Leighton Paisner’s and Wedlake Bell’s private client teams for nine years.
In 2007, she moved to KPMG’s family office and private client tax team, where she advised individuals, including both UK and non-UK residents, and trustees across a wide range of personal tax matters.
More recently, Fothergill served as a senior member of the family office and private client central technical team.
She specialises in residence and domicile, offshore trusts, inheritance tax and capital gains tax.
The firm said she is additionally deeply interested in the complexities of the UK tax system and in keeping pace with legislative developments, aiding colleagues and clients to get to grips with impending changes and what they mean for them.
Fothergill said: “I’m thrilled to be taking on this new role at Mercer and Hole and look forward to working closely with the Private Client and wider tax team, as well as the HR and training team, to support the firm’s approach to tax knowledge, training programmes and technical excellence. It is important we continue to make complex tax issues accessible, so clients receive clear, high-quality advice grounded in both technical detail and practical application.”
Mark Cassidy, joint managing partner at Mercer and Hole, added: “Liz brings deep experience and expertise, and we are delighted to welcome her to the firm. Her appointment reflects our ongoing commitment to investing in the strength and depth of our tax team, particularly at a time when tax rules are evolving and clients increasingly need bespoke advice to reflect their individual circumstances.”
