BDO has been appointed as administrators for British motorbike company Norton Motorcycles.

The Leicestershire company fell into administration after it struggled to pay a £300,000 tax bill and faced a winding-up order from HMRC, according to The Times

The administration will now place 100 jobs in the company’s Castle Donington factory at risk.

The company has been making motorcycles since 1902, and its bikes have featured in such films as the James Bond movie Spectre and the Che Guevara memoir, The Motorcycle Diaries.

The group fell into financial difficulties in 2008 but was rescued by property developer Stuart Garner who revived the business. Garner’s two other companies, the Priest House Hotel and Donnington Estates, have also gone into administration.

Lee Causer, an administrator at BDO, said: “We are taking all necessary steps to ensure that customers, staff and suppliers are supported through the administration process. Our job is to determine and execute the most appropriate strategy as swiftly as possible to protect creditors’ interests, bearing in mind the need to minimise distress for all parties.

“We are currently assessing the position of each of the companies in order to conclude upon the options available to them and the most appropriate way forward.”
