BHP has appointed Callum Doherty as a partner to lead its international and large corporate tax services, strengthening the firm’s advisory offering for UK businesses operating at scale.

Doherty will work with BHP’s wider tax team to develop its international tax service line, advising clients expanding overseas and supporting large and very large UK companies on complex domestic tax matters. The firm defines large businesses as those with accounting profits of more than £1.5m, and very large businesses as those with profits exceeding £20m.

He joins from CFGI, where he was tax director at the UK arm of the firm, advising large corporate clients on UK and international tax strategy. His previous roles include senior positions at EY, PwC and BlackRock.

BHP said the appointment reflects growing demand from clients for specialist international tax advice alongside its established UK advisory services, as businesses adapt to changing domestic and global tax rules.

Commenting on his appointment, Doherty said: “BHP has an outstanding reputation for supporting clients to grow and thrive and I’m excited to be joining the firm as a partner.

“With many UK businesses exploring international opportunities or adapting to evolving domestic and global trading requirements, ensuring they are provided with the correct expert tax and financial advice is crucial.”

He added: “Playing a trusted role in supporting businesses to thrive and finding solutions to often complex challenges, both at home and abroad, is a privilege and I am looking forward to working with ambitious owners and teams to support them achieve their goals.”

Hamish Morrison, joint chief executive at BHP, said Doherty’s appointment marked “a significant milestone” for the firm as it continued to expand its tax capability.

He said: “His experience in advising on complex UK and international matters further strengthens our tax team at a time when tax legislation in the UK and globally is continuing to change and when businesses require the clarity provided by working with expert advisors.”
