The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) has revealed that it has appointed Katie Close CA as its new director of tax.
Close will lead the ICAS tax team, overseeing technical content and resources for over 24,000 members working in more than 85 countries.
She’ll also drive the strategic development of policy influence and thought leadership in taxation as well as build on ICAS’ excellent relationships with HMRC and wider government.
She joins ICAS from Systal Technology Solutions, where she served as group head of tax since October 2024. In this role, she led the global tax function across 28 countries, driving compliance, governance, and strategic tax planning.
Her previous roles include senior tax positions at KCA Deutag and Aggreko, giving her a broad understanding of the tax challenges facing modern businesses.
Close officially began her role on 3 November and is a dual member of ICAS and the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT).
Bruce Cartwright CA, CEO at ICAS, said: “This is a pivotal appointment for ICAS at a time when tax is not only increasingly complex and central to business decision-making, but also fundamental to wider society. Tax underpins the services and infrastructure we all rely on, shaping how communities and economies thrive.
“With deep industry experience and a commitment to strong governance, Katie brings the insight and leadership needed to support our members and strengthen ICAS’ voice in the national conversation on tax and its impact on everyone.”
Close added: “ICAS is a trusted, forward-thinking voice in the tax and broader financial landscape. In line with our Royal Charter and duty to act in the public interest, my goal is to ensure ICAS continues to support members with practical guidance, champion ethical standards, and influence policy that reflects real business challenges. I’m excited to help shape the future of tax at ICAS and across the profession.”
