The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) has accredited The Open University’s (OU) BSc Accounting and Finance degree, the first time the professional body has formally recognised a distance learning programme.
According to ICAS, the partnership with the UK’s largest university establishes a new, flexible pathway into the Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification, widening access to the profession for learners in more than 180 countries.
Through the ICAS-accredited programme, students studying the OU degree can gain up to five exemptions from the first stage of the CA qualification, allowing them to progress more quickly towards professional status.
The course provides a grounding in accounting and finance in a business and societal context, alongside modules in auditing, governance, law, taxation and financial reporting.
The move follows ICAS’s recent expansion of its Graduate Apprenticeship programme in Scotland’s Central Belt, part of the institute’s broader effort to make entry into the profession more accessible and inclusive.
Founded in 1969, The Open University has taught more than 2.3 million students and currently enrols around 200,000 learners globally, maintaining its position as the UK’s largest academic institution and a leader in distance education.
Gail Boag, executive director of learning at ICAS, said: “We’re committed to providing access to the accountancy profession which is inclusive and flexible. By accrediting the OU’s accounting degree, we are opening the door for more students from various backgrounds to gain the skills, knowledge and professional recognition needed to build rewarding careers in accountancy.”
Dr Karin Shields, senior lecturer in accounting at The Open University, added: “We’re proud that our BSc Accounting and Finance degree is accredited by ICAS. This accreditation offers our students valuable exemptions and a clear pathway toward becoming Chartered Accountants, enhancing their career prospects.”
