Gosforth-based RMT Accountants and Business Advisors has announced that Stephen Slater is set to become its new managing director in the summer, as the firm works towards implementing the next stage of its growth strategy as part of the Sumer Group.

Slater, who is currently serving as RMT’s director of commercial services, will take over from Mike Pott. Both professionals have been at the firm for more than 30 years, and were made partners in 1998 and 2002 respectively.

Pott took on the role of managing partner in 2010, and then became managing director a year later when the firm incorporated.

Meanwhile, Slater is currently responsible for the delivery of audit and accountancy services at the firm, and was credited for his involvement in the creation of RMT Technology.

First established in 1954, RMT became part of the Sumer Group, a network of accountancy firms, in 2023, and has since grown through acquisitions.

RMT acquired rural and agricultural specialists McCowie and Co at the end of that year, while it joined forces last summer with Durham-headquartered Ribchesters Chartered Accountants, which now operates as RMT Ribchesters, and acquired Berwick-headquartered KSA Group in late 2024.

Warren Mead, CEO of Sumer Group, said: “Since joining Sumer in 2023, RMT has grown rapidly, executed three mergers, and recruited dozens of highly talented colleagues. Mike has been a fantastic leader throughout, and I’ve no doubt Stephen will do a brilliant job as we continue our growth journey.”
