Independent chartered accountancy and business advisory firm UNW has strengthened its specialist tax team with the appointment of Alastair Wilson and Andrew Fitton as corporate tax partners.

Between them, the pair bring more than 50 years’ experience advising businesses across the region.

Wilson trained at a Big Four firm before holding senior roles at both national and independent practices, including building and leading the tax department at a large regional firm.

His experience spans group structuring, M&A, tax-efficient fundraising, staff incentives, and R&D and capital allowances

He has also helped North East businesses claim more than £100m in R&D tax credits.

Meanwhile, Fitton joins from a UK-wide accountancy firm, where he was national lead for large corporate tax.

He previously spent 25 years with the Big Four, including 21 years at PwC, specialising in corporate tax for large and international businesses with a focus on debt, derivatives and foreign exchange.

His career also included leading PwC’s tax practice in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and a secondment as head of tax at Virgin Money.

At UNW, the two will join one of the region’s “largest” specialist tax teams, which also covers private clients, employment taxes and VAT.

Steve Lant, tax partner at UNW, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Alastair and Andrew to the firm. They are both proven performers with a real depth of expertise and experience. We already had a very strong tax team – Alastair and Andrew have made it even stronger.”
