Accountants and other finance professionals are being invited to take part in a new research project that will examine how digital technologies are “reshaping the future of their profession”.

It comes as the university said that technological innovations are transforming the accounting and finance industry by automating routine tasks and creating demand for new, tech-driven skills.

The aim of the research project, led by both the University of Essex and University of East Anglia, is to “highlight the gap between traditional accounting education and modern workplace practices, whilst also helping future financial professionals stay relevant”.

Funded by AICPA and CIMA, the study involves participants anonymously completing an online task, followed by a questionnaire. The process should take no more than 30 minutes, and all participants will receive a £25 gift voucher.

Project leader Dr Ricardo Malagueno De Santana, from Essex Business School, said: “We are hoping this study will help us understand how organisations benefit from new technologies and should support professionals in adapting to this rapidly-evolving digital world.

“Emerging technologies do pose a risk to accountants who resist change and continue focusing only on repetitive tasks that can easily be automated. However, those who embrace these technologies and see them less as a threat and more as a tool that reshapes the profession, will be better positioned to focus on analysis, decision-making, and supporting their clients.”
