The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has announced a redesign of its flagship qualification, in a move it says reflects the evolving role of the accountancy profession.

The new version of the ACCA Qualification, set to launch from mid-2027, aims to equip students with skills in sustainability, ethics and emerging technologies, alongside core financial training. It follows global consultation with employers, educators and members, including representatives of Gen Z.

The redesigned qualification will introduce integrated learning and assessment supported by artificial intelligence, as well as a new Data Science Professional exam at the final Strategic Professional level. Employability Modules will feature at each stage of the qualification, offering simulated workplace experience in areas such as digital technology and business management.

ACCA said the qualification would remain rigorous and relevant, but with an increased focus on employability. Enhanced awards will allow students to demonstrate achievements to employers throughout their training.

Helen Brand, chief executive of ACCA, said: “Accountancy is being redefined. Accountants are drivers of sustainable business, promoters of social value, and enablers of new technologies.”

Abdul Goffar, director of ACCA UK, added: “Students will benefit from tailored learning journeys supported by AI technology and a digital mentor.”

ACCA said it maintains that students currently working towards the qualification would face no disadvantage during the transition, with all achievements recognised and no additional costs imposed. The organisation will also continue its partnership with the University of London, offering students the opportunity to earn a BSc (Hons) in Professional Accountancy.

A revised ‘Foundations’ route, requiring no prior qualifications, will offer access to those not meeting standard entry criteria.
