The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has backed calls from the National Audit Office (NAO) for urgent NHS financial reforms.
CIPFA has stated that the report “adds to the overwhelming evidence that the NHS is perilously close to becoming unsustainable”.
The body has found that the NAO’s findings align closely with what it believes should be done with the NHS.
These include; recognition of the interdependence between public services, greater focus on prevention and funding and finance reform.
As a result CIPFA has urged the government to focus on “long-term solutions over short term political gains”.
It wants the decisions to address the widening gulf between demand for health services, the funding the NHS receives and how this funding is apportioned.
CIPFA stated: “The NAO’s recommendations are welcome and provide a valuable roadmap for these necessary reforms. Implementing these recommendations will be crucial in ensuring the future financial sustainability of the NHS and all public services that impact the health of the nation.”
