PwC is set to close most of its offices over Christmas and the New Year for the first time ever in a bid to save costs on energy bills, the Times has reported.

The firm, which has 19 offices in the UK, will reportedly shut its main London office from 23 December to 3 January, with smaller sites across the country set to follow suit.

According to the Times, chairman Kevin Ellis said that keeping the offices open over that period “doesn’t make sense at a time of energy scarcity”, adding that staff want the firm to “do our bit to reduce energy consumption”.

He said: “Office life is hugely important to our culture and business, but having all our offices open over the holiday period doesn’t make sense at a time of energy scarcity…We’ve taken a pragmatic approach ensuring some offices across the country remain open for those who need them.”

Some regional offices, including sites in Edinburgh, Belfast and Newcastle, are set to take a “similar approach” to its Embankment Place site in London.

An internal memo reportedly said workspace will be available at its More London base for staff based in the capital, while some regional offices will set out specific areas for workers to access.
