Advisors from Deloitte are reportedly being paid taxpayer money to assist ministers in drafting parliamentary answers and media “lines to take” in defence of the government’s test and trace system, according to Huffpost UK.
The firm’s new role is said to be part of a series of government contracts, worth £323m, to support the Department for Health and Social Care, as well as the National Testing Programme.
Deloitte’s new endeavour is reportedly unprecedented as answers to government questions are typically drafted by civil servants.
Critics within the government’s opposition believe Deloitte is “marking its own homework” due to its involvement in government contracts, according to Huffpost UK.
Labour MP Stella Creasy is among the MPs who have submitted parliamentary questions regarding Deloitte’s involvement in the testing programme.
Documents from the government have revealed the firm has received four different contracts worth £323m since the onset of the pandemic, with the most recent being for £122m which runs from February this year through to September.
