HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC) online services were hit by today’s global Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage, leaving customers unable to log into their accounts, though the issue has since been resolved.
Earlier today, HMRC confirmed that some of its customers were impacted by the outage and warned that its helplines are busy as a result.
An HMRC spokesperson told the BBC: “We’re aware that customers are having problems accessing our online services, as part of global issues affecting Amazon Web Services. We’re working urgently with them on this matter.
“Our phonelines are currently busy as a result, so for anything that isn’t urgent we recommend calling at a later time.”
The problem, which started on Monday morning, was related to an issue at AWS. As of 9:20am GMT, there were more than 2,000 reports of the AWS outage in the US alone, according to website Downdetector.
Other affected sites included Duolingo, Xero, Wordle, Snapchat and Amazon itself. Halifax and Lloyds were also affected.
The issue has since been resolved, and an HMRC spokesperson told Accountancy Today: “Customers can access our online services as normal, as the global issue which affected Amazon Web Services has now been resolved. We thank customers for their patience while the problem was being resolved.”
