The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) has announced Ken Thomson has stepped down as the chair of its Regulation Board.
In a short statement ICAS said Thomson, who had only been in the position for a month, had resigned for “personal reasons” and that his resignation was accepted from 31 January 2024.
According to The Times, the news comes after UK Covid inquiry sessions in Edinburgh claimed that Thomson advised some senior members of the Scottish government to delete WhatsApp messages in case they be made public through a Freedom of Information request.
During the inquest Thomson denied any culture of deleting messages among senior government figures during the pandemic.
ICAS said it will shortly begin the process of appointing a new chair of the regulation board. Alongside regulation policy, the board has responsibility for investigating complaints and monitoring how professional standards are maintained.
