The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) has appointed Elizabeth Hambley as an independent non-executive member and awarded honorary membership to former board member Malcolm Wood.

Wood was recognised for his dedication, contribution and services to the profession, having served as a non-executive board member with the accountancy body since 2019. He will become the 12th honorary member in ICAEW’s 146-year history and will end his term of office on the institute’s board in June.

Prior to his appointment, Wood had extensive experience in governance and regulatory affairs following a legal career in private practice and the UK financial services industry, including as group company secretary at Lloyds Banking Group.

Elizabeth Hambley CB has been appointed as an independent non-executive ICAEW board member, succeeding Wood for a three-year term. Hambley has served as a civil service commissioner and non-executive board member since 2024, having held previous roles as executive board member for the Government Legal Department and director general for its commercial, trade and international directorate.

Peter Wyman, ICAEW chair of the board, said: “I am delighted that Malcolm Wood has become an honorary member of ICAEW and commend him for his outstanding contribution to the Institute. This award is testament to Malcolm’s deep understanding of governance and regulation, championing the public interest and supporting the Board and ICAEW to perform so effectively throughout his six years of service.

“I also welcome Elizabeth Hambley to the board as an independent non-executive board member. Elizabeth brings extensive experience from her career in the legal profession and at the highest levels of government. She will play a key role in providing independent oversight and constructive challenge to ensure the Board continues to operate effectively.”

Wood said: “It has been a huge privilege to serve on the Board of ICAEW in a period of significant change and development. Receiving honorary membership came as a great surprise and is something that I value very much.”

Hambley said: “I am delighted and honoured to join the ICAEW Board. I look forward to working with Peter, non-executive colleagues and the ICAEW team to support the Board’s continued focus on operating with integrity, transparency and impact, for the benefit of its members and in the public interest.”
