Civil service spending on contracts with Big Four firms has been cut by 26%, according to new data from government spending analyst Tussell.
Deloitte was found to be the worst affected, with government spending on its services down 38% this financial year. However, it still received £336m from the civil service, the highest amount amongst the Big Four.
Meanwhile, public sector spending with PwC was down 36% this year, while EY saw a 19% fall in spending.
KPMG was the only Big Four firm to see an increase, with the number of public contracts rising by 18%.
However, according to City AM, Management Consultancies Association has questioned the figures.
The organisation’s chief, Tamzen Isacsson, told the publication: “It is totally inaccurate to claim that spending on consultancy services by the public sector has ‘collapsed’. In fact, we will record that it is increasing this year.
“Our most recent research from leaders of MCA member firms, due to be published in January, shows that overall consultancy spend for 2023 has grown by 11%.”
