Cowgills has acquired Wigan-based NRB Chartered Accountants for an undisclosed sum, further strengthening its footprint in the North West

According to the firm, the move aligns with its ambitious growth strategy, which aims for a 25% expansion over the next 12 months.

The acquisition provides Cowgills with a Wigan office, adding to its existing locations in Bolton, Manchester, and Liverpool, and increasing its team from 220 to 250 professionals.

Founded in 1948 by Norman Richard Barton, NRB offers expert accounting, taxation, and business advisory services. It has developed particular expertise in digital technology solutions to support its clients.

Cowgills joined the Sumer Group in early 2024, gaining the backing to execute its acquisition strategy, focusing on firms that align with its entrepreneurial ethos and dynamic culture.

Cowgills were advised by Dickson Minto and NRB, Forbes Solicitors.

Paul Stringer, managing partner at Cowgills, said: “We’ve been highly selective in choosing firms that share our values and culture—ones that will truly benefit and enhance our business.

“The team at NRB embodies everything we stand for, and their expertise will be a tremendous asset strengthening our presence in Wigan and Lancashire. Their knowledge in digital technology also presents exciting new opportunities for our clients and our firm.”

Catherine Rogers, partner at NRB, added: “Having been established in Wigan for over 75 years, our priority was ensuring any merger was with a firm that our team and clients could trust completely.

“We have known the team at Cowgills for many years and are thrilled to be joining forces with a firm that shares our values and commitment to exceptional client service. This partnership marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, enabling us to continue delivering leading advice while unlocking new opportunities for our clients.”
