Interpath Advisory appointed administrator of Algal Omega 3

Interpath Advisory is set to oversee the administration of Algal Omega 3 Limited after the business struggled with rising production costs.Stuart Irwin and Richard Harrison were appointed as joint administrators on 27 May 2025.

The business has used fermentation technology on microalgae to manufacture crude algal oil for a variety of applications. 

It employs 42 staff from its advanced manufacturing site at Knowsley Business Park South. 

However, in recent years it has struggled to stay competitive in the international market due to increasing production costs. After recently losing its last remaining contract, the directors were “left with no option” but to place the business into administration.

The joint administrators will begin an accelerated M&A process to market the business for sale. In the meantime, the manufacturing plant remains operational to complete outstanding orders.

Stuart Irwin, managing director at Interpath and joint administrator, said: “The team at Algal built an impressive fermentation and extraction site in Knowsley with advanced processes and capabilities. Unfortunately, with such intense competition in the international market for omega-3, the business couldn’t retain key contracts amidst rising production costs.

“We will launch a sale process for the business and assets and urge any interested parties to come forward. We are on site to support staff and work with the team to ensure an orderly wind down of operations.”
