Shorts Chartered Accountants has acquired South Yorkshire firm Hewson and Howson, as founders Ian Hewson and Andrew Howson retire. All employees of Hewson and Howson will join Shorts. Established in 1995, Hewson and Howson built a strong reputation for providing partner-led services to owner-managed businesses. Shorts' managing partner, Andy Irvine, praised the alignment of both firms' cultures and commitment to quality service. Hewson and Howson emphasised the importance of finding a firm with similar values to ensure their clients continue to receive high-level support. The acquisition ensures continuity and growth opportunities for Hewson and Howson staff and clients. Xeinadin has acquired Clay Shaw Thomas, a family-run Bridgend accountancy firm, marking its 24th expansion in two years. Clay Shaw Thomas, established over 70 years ago, serves a diverse client base, from small businesses to large SMEs. The acquisition enhances Xeinadin’s service offerings and strengthens its presence in Wales. Clay Shaw Thomas' 17 accountants and two directors will join Xeinadin, maintaining leadership under Gwyn Williams and Karen Best. CEO Derry Crowley and Tax Director Karen Best emphasised the cultural and ethical alignment between the firms, highlighting the collaborative effort to provide excellent client service. Moore UK has appointed Mark Lance as CEO and Matt Meadows as chair. Lance, a veteran of Moore, aims to expand the brand in the UK and enhance member firm experiences. Meadows, now chair, has been managing partner of Moore Kingston Smith since May 2024. Lance expressed enthusiasm for building the network’s presence and fostering a collaborative culture. Grant Thornton has promoted David Smith to accounting services director for the South of England. Based in Reading, Smith will focus on growing the service line and enhancing client relationships. With over five years at the firm, Smith has progressed from manager to senior manager. He has expanded the local accounting team to 11 members, contributing to the national team of 75. Practice lead Norman Armstrong commended Smith's leadership and commitment to client service.
